Anna
Kiesenhofer

Mathematician, Cyclist,
Olympic Gold Medallist

Anna Kiesenhofer is a mathematician from Austria working in research and teaching at EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland). She achieved overnight fame by winning the road-cycling event at the Tokyo Olympic Games this summer. Her victory was unusual in many ways. Riding without a professional team and not having a coach or nutritionist, she relied on her analytical mindset to devise her training plan and race strategy. Her success was the result of years of hard training and the incarnation of her life motto “dare to be different”: dare to step away from the beaten track and be critical about traditional frameworks and authority.
